## Frequently Asked Questions
How is OBS different from an ASC?
OBS is any surgical or invasive procedure performed by a licensed physician in a location other than a hospital or ASC. The single most important structural difference: ASCs do not allow OD ownership. OBS does. That one fact is the reason this category exists for optometry.
How is OBS different from co-management?
With co-management, you refer the patient out, share post-op care, and collect a small slice of the pro fee. With OBS, the patient stays within your practice, and you retain the surgical revenue - 4-10x higher than a co-management fee.
Does OBS expand my scope of practice?
No. OBS is an ownership structure, not a licensing change. The surgeon operates under their license within the optometrist’s practice.
How many surgical patients do I need for OBS to work for my practice?
As little as 10-15 patients a month.
How do I find a surgeon to work with?

Where does malpractice liability fall?
Exactly where it falls now. It is no different from when you're co-managing a case. The surgeon will operate under their license and will be liable for their actions. The optometrists will be operating under their license and will be liable for their actions.

It depends on the model. It can take as little as 60 days if you are leasing an existing space or up to 18 months if you are building out a new space.
